Leaving Us A Legacy

Thinking about leaving a gift in your Will?

At the Suffolk & Cambridgeshire Regiment Museum, we rely on the generosity of our supporters to protect and share the story of the Regiments. A gift in your Will, whatever its size, can make a lasting difference and will be received with genuine gratitude.

Why us?

For centuries, the soldiers of the Suffolk and Cambridgeshire Regiments have served with distinction at home and overseas. Their service has shaped local communities and contributed to events of national and global significance, from major conflicts to quieter acts of duty carried out far from the spotlight.

Our collections tell the stories of the men who served — drawn from towns and villages across the region, and from many different backgrounds. Through uniforms, medals, photographs, letters and other personal objects, we bring their experiences to life with honesty, respect and care.

Whether they were senior officers or young recruits, serving on the front line or in vital supporting roles, their stories deserve to be remembered. The Museum exists to preserve this heritage so that future generations can understand, reflect on the past and be inspired by it.

We are continually working to care for our collections, develop new displays, and widen access through learning, outreach and research. To do this, we depend on the support of people who share our commitment to safeguarding the Regiments' legacy.

Why make a Will?

Making a Will allows you to ensure that the people and causes that matter to you are supported in the future. Planning ahead can give peace of mind and help avoid unnecessary difficulties for your loved ones.

By remembering the Suffolk & Cambridgeshire Regiments' Museum in your Will, you can help us care for our collections, improve our exhibitions and continue sharing the Regiments' histories with the public.

Gifts to charities are, in general, free from Inheritance Tax, Capital Gains Tax and Income Tax, meaning that your Legacy can support the Museum in full.

Our promise to you

We understand that planning for the future can feel daunting, and we want to reassure you that your wishes, privacy and peace of mind are very important to us.

All gifts are valued equally, and you are under no obligation to tell us about your plans. If you do choose to let us know, there will never be any pressure or expectation placed upon you. Where possible, we will always do our best to honour any wishes you express, such as supporting a particular area of the Museum’s work.

If you leave a gift, you and your loved ones are always welcome to visit the Museum and see how your support is helping to preserve the Regiments' history.

Please remember that circumstances can change, and you are free to amend your Will at any time.

How do I make a Will, and what type of Legacy gift is right for me?

Making or updating a Will can be straightforward, and further guidance is available from organisations such as Citizens Advice.

We strongly recommend seeking advice from a qualified solicitor when writing, reviewing or amending your Will, to ensure that your wishes are clearly recorded and legally valid.

There are several ways to leave a Legacy to the Museum, including:

  • a share of your estate

  • a fixed sum of money

  • a specific item or asset

These are commonly known as:

Residuary Legacy
A gift of all or part of your estate after taxes, expenses and other gifts have been paid. This is usually expressed as a percentage or share.

Pecuniary Legacy
A fixed sum of money. As inflation can reduce the value of a fixed gift over time, it is worth reviewing your Will periodically.

Specific Legacy
A gift of a particular item or asset, such as shares, jewellery or historically significant objects.
